" Groups continue to argue possible thimerosal, autism link "

Leaders of federal health agencies and medical societies called a press briefing yesterday to emphasize childhood vaccines are safe and do not cause autism. Parents of children with autism scheduled a rally in Washington to call for a ban on mercury in all medical products.

For years, the debate over the possible effect thimerosal, a mercury-based vaccine preservative, has played on the incidence of autism has raged on. Although thimerosal is no longer used in vaccines, it has been blamed for the increase in autism rates throughout the years.

This summer, Rolling Stone and Salon.com printed an article by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., which claimed medical authorities deliberately hid evidence of a connection between thimerosal and autism. The publications followed a heavily advertised book Evidence of Harm , bringing more momentum to the debate.

In 1999, health officials recommended thimerosal be phased-out of vaccines for babies to reduce their overall exposure to mercury. Still, thimerosal is used in most flu shots, though preservative free versions are available.

Around 95 percent of U.S. children receive all the recommended vaccines by the time they start school, but health officials are concerned that fears about possible links between thimerosal and the increasing rates of autism will cause parents to raise questions about vaccine safety and reduce the high percentage of children getting the shots.

According to the director of Safe Minds, Sallie Bernard, health officials “missed the point” in Tuesday's briefing, and the question groups and parents have for officials is what effect thimerosal had on kids since the cause of autism is still unknown. While studies are being performed to identify possible causes of autism, Bernard said they are looking at everything but thimerosal.

In addition to Safe Minds, other groups participating at the rally include Moms Against Mercury and the National Autism Association.
